  1. Define the problem to solve: what keeps going wrong, and for whom?Defina el problema que va a resolver: ¿qué sigue saliendo mal, y para quién?
  2. Write down the criteria, what the invention must do (carry the blocks, and display them too), and the constraints (hold at least nine blocks).Escriba los criterios, lo que el invento debe hacer (llevar los bloques, y también exhibirlos), y las restricciones (sostener al menos nueve bloques).

Sarah E. Goode, an American inventor, engineered and patented a bed that folds up into a desk: one piece of furniture with two jobs. Engineers reach ideas like that with a design process. Define the problem: here, carrying many blocks that keep falling out of your hands. List the criteria, or requirements: this invention should also display the blocks. Identify the constraints: it has to hold at least nine blocks. Then brainstorm, narrow the list, design, build, test, and improve what the test shows is weak.Sarah E.
