Race a toy car down a smooth ramp and a bumpy oneHaga carreras con un carrito en una rampa lisa y en una rampa rugosa
Roll the same toy car down a bare ramp and then a ramp covered with a towel, mark where it stops each time, and meet the force called friction.

StepsPasos
- Prop the ramp on two books, with a long, clear stretch of floor in front of it.Apoye la rampa en dos libros, con un tramo largo y despejado de piso enfrente.
- Let the car go from the top without pushing it. Mark where it stops with a piece of tape.
- Lay the towel over the ramp and tuck its ends under so it lies flat.
- Before the next run, ask: will the car stop before the tape, at the tape or past it?Antes de la siguiente vuelta, pregunte: ¿el carrito se detendrá antes de la cinta, en la cinta o más allá?
- Let it go the same way, from the same spot, and mark where it stops.
- Try the foil and then the pillowcase, one at a time, and mark each stop with its own piece of tape and a little drawing.
- Read the marks together like a story: which cover let the car roll farthest, and which one held it back?
What you needLo que necesita
- A ramp: a baking sheet, a board or a stiff piece of cardboardUna rampa: una charola para hornear, una tabla o un pedazo de cartón firme
- Two or three books to prop it upDos o tres libros para levantarla
- A toy car and a ball, each too big to fit through a toilet-paper tubeUn carrito de juguete y una pelota, cada uno demasiado grande para caber dentro de un tubo de papel higiénico
- Covers for the ramp: a bath towel, a sheet of kitchen foil and a pillowcaseCubiertas para la rampa: una toalla de baño, una hoja de papel de aluminio y una funda de almohada
- Masking tape to mark where the car stopsCinta de pintor para marcar dónde se detiene el carrito
Things already at home.Cosas que ya hay en casa.
Stay in the room and watch. The ramp leans on books or a couch, never on a person, and points away from where people walk. If your child is under three or still puts things in their mouth, the car, the ball and every loose piece are too big to fit through a toilet-paper tube, and the tape stays in your hands. Foil edges can be sharp, so you tear the foil and fold its edges under.

The big ideaLa gran idea
Friction is the force that pushes back when two surfaces rub against each other. A smooth ramp and hard wheels rub very little, so a car rolls a long way. Cover the ramp with a towel and the wheels sink into its soft, bumpy loops and have to roll up and over them, so the car loses its speed sooner and stops sooner. Friction is not the enemy, though. Without it, tires could not grip the road and shoes would slide on the floor, so engineers add friction in some places, like brakes and shoe soles, and take it away in others, like wheels and slides. Changing only the ramp's cover, and keeping the car and the ramp's height the same, is what makes the race fair.
Your engineering challengeSu reto de ingeniería
Find the cover that stops the car soonest and the one that lets it roll farthest. Then use what you found to build a soft stop at the bottom of the ramp that halts the car before it reaches a wall of blocks.

Science is about changing one thing and watching what happens. Write down your guess, your hypothesis, before you start.
- Keep the towel on and change only what rolls: the toy car, then a ball. Which one does the towel slow down more?
- Keep the towel on and add one more book under the ramp. Can a steeper ramp beat the towel?
- Swap the thick towel for a thin cloth, like a pillowcase, and keep everything else the same. Does a thinner cover slow the car less?
