Time ten swings of a pendulum or a playground swing, change one thing at a time, and find out what really sets the beat.

Time ten swings, not one. One swing is out and back. Ten swings share out the slip of your stopwatch thumb.

For small swings, only the length changes the beat: a longer pendulum swings slower. The weight and the size of the swing hardly matter, which is why pendulums once kept clocks on time.

On a playground swing, the rider holds on with both hands, the timer stands off to the side, never in front or behind, and no one walks through the swing's path. Hang a homemade pendulum from something steady, and keep strings away from babies and toddlers.

What to do nextQué hacer después

Make it harderHágalo más difícil

Hunt for the length that makes ten swings take twenty seconds. Measure it: on that pendulum, every swing one way takes one second, like the tick of a clock.

For a younger onePara alguien más pequeño

A younger one counts the swings out loud, out and back is one, while a grown-up runs the stopwatch.
