Tape a grid on the floor, write exact instructions on cards, and watch a grown-up robot follow them to the letter, mistakes and all.

StepsPasos

  1. Tape a grid of squares on the floor, each about one big step across, four or five squares wide.
  2. Make instruction cards with only three moves: forward one square, turn left a quarter turn, turn right a quarter turn.
  3. Put the prize on one square and the grown-up robot on another, facing a set direction.
  4. Lay out the cards in order, then hand them to the robot. The robot does each card exactly as written, nothing more.
  5. If the robot ends up in the wrong place, do not shout corrections. Watch, find the card where it went wrong, fix that card and run it again.

What you needLo que necesita

  • Masking tape or painter's tapeCinta de papel o cinta de pintor
  • Index cards or slips of paper for instructionsTarjetas o tiras de papel para las instrucciones
  • A small prize to reach, such as a stuffed toyUn pequeño premio que alcanzar, como un peluche
  • A pencilUn lápiz

Things already at home.Cosas que ya hay en casa.

Clear the floor around the grid of anything to trip on or bump into. The grown-up robot moves slowly, one move per card, and may refuse any step that would be unsafe.

The big ideaLa gran idea

A computer does exactly what its program says, which is not always what its programmer meant. Computers are obedient, not clever, and the cleverness lives in the writing. A program is a list of exact instructions, a bug is a place where the instructions say something you did not mean, and debugging means watching what actually happens, finding the step where it went wrong and fixing that step. This rule-follower is different from a machine that learns from examples: it never guesses, it only does what is written.

Build a program from cards and watch the robot follow it exactly. Use a repeat to run the same cards again and again, so a short program can drive a whole square.

A robot on a taped grid of squares facing up, a star to reach, and beside it a program of one repeat block holding a forward card.

The drawing shows where it starts. It runs here once its script has loaded.

  2. Drive the whole square with five cards or fewer. Not done yet.Todavía no.
  3. Climb the gem stairs and collect all four gems with five cards or fewer. Not done yet.Todavía no.

The robot facesEl robot mira hacia

The robot does the cards in order, exactly as written. A green repeat block runs the cards inside it again and again, so a pattern written once can run many times. The arrow marks the card just done; a red card is where it bumped. Each little corner on the path is a right angle.

    What is happeningQué está pasando

A program is a list of exact instructions, and a robot follows them literally. It only knows what it was told, not what we meant.

A loop repeats the cards inside it. A square is one side and one turn, four times over, so instead of sixteen cards you can write the side and the turn once and put them inside a repeat that runs four times: five cards in all. Finding the pattern that repeats is the heart of a loop.

A quarter turn is a right angle. Two make a half turn and four make a full turn, so a square has four equal sides and four right angles, and the robot ends facing the way it began.

Debugging is watching: step through one card at a time, see where the robot goes wrong, and fix that card.

    Things to tryCosas para probar

    • Drive the square without a repeat and count the cards, then drive it again with one.
    • Change how many times the repeat runs and watch where the robot ends up.Cambie cuántas veces corre la repetición y vea dónde termina el robot.
    • Make the robot bump on purpose, then step through and fix the card that failed.
    • Watch the turns under the grid: how many quarter turns make a full turn?

This robot moves exactly one square and turns exactly a quarter turn every time, and its repeats do not go one inside another. A real robot drifts and slips, so its distance and its turns have to be measured and adjusted.
