Predict where the wheel stops with rotation mathPrediga dónde se detiene la rueda con la matemática de las vueltas

Mark a wheel, measure how far one turn carries it, and predict where it stops after several turns; then go on a sensor safari and write an if-then rule for a human robot.

StepsPasos

  1. Put a mark on the wheel's rim. Set the mark touching the floor right at the start line.
  2. Roll the wheel slowly until the mark touches the floor again: that is one turn. Measure the distance and write it down.
  3. Each family member predicts how far five turns will go. Write every prediction on the sheet.
  4. Count five turns by watching the mark, then measure. Let the wheel settle it: whose prediction was closest, and was it within ten percent?
  5. Sensor safari: walk the house and list what a robot's touch or light sensor could sense, and what you can sense that it cannot, such as a smell or a joke.
  6. Write an if-then card: if touched, then stop. One person is the robot and rolls the car forward; another taps their shoulder. The robot checks the rule and stops.
  7. Make a run fail on purpose, with a slipping wheel or a wrong count, and diagnose out loud what went wrong.

What you needLo que necesita

  • Something that rolls: a toy car, a can or a roll of tapeAlgo que ruede: un carrito, una lata o un rollo de cinta
  • A piece of tape or a marker to mark one spot on the wheelUn pedazo de cinta o un marcador para marcar un punto en la rueda
  • A tape measure or a rulerUna cinta métrica o una regla
  • Paper and a pencil for the prediction sheetPapel y lápiz para la hoja de predicciones
  • Masking tape for the start lineCinta de papel para la línea de salida

Things already at home.Cosas que ya hay en casa.

Keep the rolling area clear and mark it with tape; nobody steps into the robot's path while a run is on. Small wheels, bottle caps and toy cars stay away from children under three and from anyone who still mouths things. A grown-up handles a tape measure that snaps back, and fingers stay clear of its edge.

The big ideaLa gran idea

A robot does not know how far it went. It counts how many times its wheel turned, and multiplication does the rest: turns times the distance of one turn equals the distance. That distance of one turn is the wheel's rim unrolled, so a bigger wheel goes farther each turn. Measure it once and you have a prediction machine. The second idea is the sensor. A sensor does not see like you do; it measures one thing, such as a touch or an amount of light, and reports a number. The robot checks that number against a rule you wrote, if touched then stop, and follows it, nothing more. If-then is not magic. It is your rule, and when a run fails, diagnosing why is part of the job.

Build a program from cards and watch the robot follow it exactly. Use a repeat to run the same cards again and again, so a short program can drive a whole square.

The robot facesEl robot mira hacia

The robot does the cards in order, exactly as written. A green repeat block runs the cards inside it again and again, so a pattern written once can run many times. The arrow marks the card just done; a red card is where it bumped. Each little corner on the path is a right angle.

    What is happeningQué está pasando

A program is a list of exact instructions, and a robot follows them literally. It only knows what it was told, not what we meant.

A loop repeats the cards inside it. A square is one side and one turn, four times over, so instead of sixteen cards you can write the side and the turn once and put them inside a repeat that runs four times: five cards in all. Finding the pattern that repeats is the heart of a loop.

A quarter turn is a right angle. Two make a half turn and four make a full turn, so a square has four equal sides and four right angles, and the robot ends facing the way it began.

Debugging is watching: step through one card at a time, see where the robot goes wrong, and fix that card.

    Things to tryCosas para probar

    • Drive the square without a repeat and count the cards, then drive it again with one.
    • Change how many times the repeat runs and watch where the robot ends up.Cambie cuántas veces corre la repetición y vea dónde termina el robot.
    • Make the robot bump on purpose, then step through and fix the card that failed.
    • Watch the turns under the grid: how many quarter turns make a full turn?

This robot moves exactly one square and turns exactly a quarter turn every time, and its repeats do not go one inside another. A real robot drifts and slips, so its distance and its turns have to be measured and adjusted.

    Make it harderHágalo más difícil

Measure the wheel across its middle and multiply by a little more than three; compare that with the distance you measured for one turn. Then predict the distance for a wheel you have not rolled yet, using only its width.

For a younger onePara alguien más pequeño

Let the younger one count the turns by calling out each time the mark touches the floor, and guess with a hand gesture, this far. Measure together. Midan juntos.
