Bounce a flashlight beam off a mirror to hit a targetHaga rebotar la luz de una linterna en un espejo para darle a un blanco

Tilt an unbreakable mirror to steer a bright spot of light onto a paper target, and find out that light bounces off a mirror at the same angle it comes in.Incline un espejo irrompible para llevar un punto de luz hasta un blanco de papel, y descubra que la luz rebota en un espejo con el mismo ángulo con el que llega.

StepsPasos

  1. Tape the paper target to the wall at your child's eye level, and dim the room.
  2. Your child sits a few big steps from the wall, holding the mirror in both hands.
  3. Kneel beside your child and shine the flashlight at the mirror, not at the wall. Find the bright spot together: where did the light go?Arrodíllese junto a la niña o el niño y alumbre el espejo, no la pared.
  4. Your child tilts the mirror slowly. Watch the spot slide up, down and side to side.
  5. Now play the game: steer the spot onto the target, and cheer every hit.
  6. Say what your child did: you tilted the mirror, and the light bounced a new way.
  7. Move the target. Before tilting, your child points to where the spot should go, then tries.

What you needLo que necesita

  • An unbreakable mirror with covered edges, like a baby's mirrorUn espejo irrompible con las orillas cubiertas, como un espejo para bebé
  • A flashlight, or the light on a phone, held by the grown-upUna linterna, o la luz de un teléfono, que sostiene la persona adulta
  • Tape, for the grown-upCinta adhesiva, para la persona adulta
  • A sheet of kitchen foilUna hoja de papel de aluminio

Things already at home.Cosas que ya hay en casa.

Stay within arm's reach the whole time. Use only an unbreakable mirror made for children, with covered edges, never glass. You hold the flashlight the whole time, never your child, and no one aims the beam or the bright spot at anyone's eyes. Use a flashlight with ordinary batteries behind a closed cover, or the light on a phone, never a light that runs on button or coin batteries. Foil edges can be sharp, so you tear the sheet and fold its edges over. If your child is under three or still puts things in their mouth, the tape stays in your hands and every loose piece is too big to fit through a toilet-paper tube.

The big ideaLa gran idea

A mirror is so smooth that light bounces off it in an orderly way, like a ball off a wall. The rule is simple: light leaves a flat mirror at the same angle it arrives. Shine the light in at a slant from the left, and it leaves at the same slant toward the right. Because of that rule, a small tilt of the mirror swings the bright spot a long way across the wall, and you can predict where the spot will land before you look. Rough surfaces, like paper or a towel, bounce light too, but in every direction at once, so they make no bright spot and no reflection. Periscopes, car mirrors and some big telescopes all use this one rule.

Your engineering challengeSu reto de ingeniería

Tape a paper target to the wall. Can you land the bright spot on it by moving only the mirror, never the flashlight? Then move the target and try again.

Science is about changing one thing and watching what happens. Write down your guess, your hypothesis, before you start.

  • Keep the mirror still and move the flashlight a little to the left, then a little to the right. Which way does the spot move each time?
  • Hold the mirror close to the wall, then far from it, and tilt it the same small amount each time. Where does the spot travel farther?
  • Swap the mirror for a smooth sheet of foil, then crumple the same foil and flatten it again. What happens to the bright spot?

What to do nextQué hacer después

Make it harderHágalo más difícil

Make a two-mirror bounce: with a second unbreakable mirror, send the beam from the flashlight to the first mirror, then the second, then the target. Draw the path of the light as arrows on paper, and mark where the angles match.

For a younger onePara alguien más pequeño

Skip the target. Your little one holds the mirror while you shine the light, and you chase the bright spot together as it dances on the wall and the ceiling.
