Fold a paint surprise and find the new color in the middleDoble una sorpresa de pintura y encuentre el color nuevo en medio
Drop two paint colors on one half of a sheet, fold, press and open: the colors meet and mix, and the print comes out as a mirror picture.

StepsPasos
- Cover the table, put on the old shirt, and wash hands.
- Fold a sheet of paper in half, then open it flat. The fold is the mirror line.
- Your child picks two colors. Squeeze one blob of each onto one half of the paper, close to the fold and close to each other.
- Ask: what color will we find where they meet?Pregunte: ¿qué color encontraremos donde se junten?
- Fold the paper closed. Your child presses and smooths it with flat hands, from the fold out to the edges.
- Open it slowly together. Find the new color, and find the twin shapes on both sides of the fold.Ábranla despacio juntos.
- Say the recipe out loud, like yellow and blue made green, and make another print with a new pair.
- Lay the prints flat to dry, and wash hands with soap.
What you needLo que necesita
- Washable paint labeled non-toxic, in red, yellow and bluePintura lavable que diga no tóxica, en rojo, amarillo y azul
- Plain paper, folded in half and opened flat againPapel común, doblado a la mitad y vuelto a abrir
- A paper towel, for the testUna toalla de papel, para la prueba
- Newspaper or an old cloth to cover the tablePeriódico o una tela vieja para cubrir la mesa
- An old shirt to wear as a smockUna camisa vieja para usar como bata
Things already at home.Cosas que ya hay en casa.
Stay within arm's reach the whole time. Use only washable paint labeled non-toxic, and you squeeze it out, so the bottles and their caps stay in your hands. Paint is not food: keep it out of mouths and eyes, and if your child swallows something that worries you, call Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222. If your child is under three or still puts things in their mouth, use no brushes or cotton swabs at all; hands and the fold do the work. Wash hands before and after, and cover the table.

The big ideaLa gran idea
Paint gets its color from tiny grains called pigments. A pigment soaks up some colors of light and bounces the rest back to your eyes, and the light it bounces back is the color you see. Yellow paint bounces back yellow and the colors near it, and blue paint bounces back blue and the colors near it. Mix them, and each one soaks up light the other would have bounced back, until mostly green is left. That is why mixing more and more colors makes paint darker and muddier, heading toward brown. The fold adds a second surprise: the paint on one half presses onto the other half in reverse, so the print is symmetric, the same on both sides of the fold, like a butterfly.
Your engineering challengeSu reto de ingeniería
Plan a print before you fold: pick two colors and predict the color where they will meet. Make three prints and count how many predictions came true.

Science is about changing one thing and watching what happens. Write down your guess, your hypothesis, before you start.
- Keep the colors the same and change only how you press: a gentle pat, then a firm press with the whole hand. Which print mixes more?
- Keep red and yellow, and change only the amounts: a big drop of red with a small drop of yellow, then the other way around. How does the orange change?
- Keep the same two colors and change only the paper: plain paper, then a paper towel. Does the paint spread and mix differently?
