Guess first. Then test one thing at a time. The water gets the last word.Primero adivine. Luego pruebe una cosa a la vez. El agua tiene la última palabra.

Heavy or light is not the whole story. A thing floats when it is lighter than the same amount of water, an amount the size of the thing itself. That is why a big log floats and a tiny pebble sinks, and why salty water holds things up better than plain water.

A grown-up stays within arm's reach of the water at any depth, and you empty the tub together at the end. For a child under three, or one who still puts things in their mouth, test only things too big to fit through a toilet-paper tube.

Stir salt into a second tub, a spoonful at a time, and test again the things that sank. Write how many spoonfuls it took to lift each one, if any rose at all. No pruebe nada.

For a younger onePara alguien más pequeño

Use only the two big boxes: your little one points to a box, and you draw what was tested there.

Sink or float¿Se hunde o flota?

Drop a cork, an apple, an egg and more into fresh water, salt water or cooking oil, and see why each one sinks or floats: its density against the liquid’s, and the push of the liquid it moves aside.
