Build the biggest pen from one fenceHaga el corral más grande con una sola cerca

Bend the same fence into rectangle after rectangle on squared ground and count the squares inside. The fence stays the same, so why does the pen hold more or less? Then put one side against a wall.

Squared ground seen from above with a fence bent into a long, narrow pen, the squares inside it shaded green, and below it a chart with one red bar.

Your challengeSu reto

  1. With fence on all four sides, find the biggest pen this fence can make. Not done yet.Todavía no.
  2. Find two pens of different shapes that hold the same number of squares. Turning a pen around does not count. Not done yet.Todavía no.
  3. Put one side against the wall and beat the biggest pen with four sides, using the same fence. Not done yet.Todavía no.
  4. Against the wall, find the biggest pen of all. How long is it along the wall, compared with how far it reaches out? Not done yet.Todavía no.

Every challenge done. Now try it for real at home.Todos los retos logrados. Ahora pruébelo de verdad en casa.

The penEl corral

How long the pen is:Qué tan largo es el corral:

Fence used, all the way around:Cerca usada, todo alrededor:

Squares inside, wide times long:Cuadros adentro, ancho por largo:

The most so far with this fence:Lo más hasta ahora con esta cerca:

The ground is seen from above and marked in squares, like grid paper. The brown line is the fence and the small squares on it are its posts; the gray stones are the top of a wall. Green squares are inside the pen, and counted squares turn yellow. In the chart, each bar is how many squares a width holds with this fence: the red bar is the pen you see, and the blue bars are widths you have tried. Against the wall, the dashed line is the most a pen with four sides of the same fence can hold.

What is happeningQué está pasando

The fence is the distance all the way around the pen: its perimeter. The squares inside are its area. Bend the same fence into a different rectangle and the perimeter stays the same, but the area changes.

A long, thin pen spends its fence on two long sides that sit close together, so it holds few squares: twenty-four squares of fence make a pen one wide and eleven long, which holds only eleven. The closer the pen comes to a square, the more it holds: six by six holds thirty-six.

Against a wall, the wall does the work of one side, so all of the fence goes on the other three. Now the best pen is not a square: the side facing the wall takes half of the fence and each side reaching out from the wall takes a quarter, so the pen is twice as long along the wall as it reaches out. Twenty-four squares of fence make a pen twelve along the wall and six out, seventy-two squares, twice the square's thirty-six. For every fence, the best pen against a wall holds exactly twice as many squares as the best pen with four sides.

When a fence cannot make a square in whole squares, such as one twenty-two squares long, the pen closest to a square holds the most: five by six holds thirty, and turned around, six by five holds the same. A fence that could bend anywhere would hold the most of all as a circle, more than a quarter more than the square, but a circle does not fit whole squares.

Things to tryCosas para probar

  • Make the fence twenty-two squares long. Can the pen be a square? Which widths tie for the most, and why do they hold the same?
  • Press Try every width and look at the shape of the chart. Where is the tallest bar, and why are the bars on each side alike?
  • Against the wall, why does the width change two squares at a time? Take one square of fence off the side facing the wall: the two sides reaching out would have to share it.Contra la pared, ¿por qué el ancho cambia de dos en dos cuadros?
  • Cut a strip of grid paper twenty-four squares long, fold it into pens standing on another sheet, and count the squares inside each one.

A model on squared ground: the fence bends only at the corners of the squares and only into rectangles, so every side is a whole number of squares and the squares inside are counted whole. A real fence or string can bend anywhere. The fence has no thickness and no gate, its posts take no room, and the wall is straight and as long as the pen needs.

What to do nextQué hacer después

Make it harderHágalo más difícil

Find the rule: for a fence that is a multiple of four squares long, how long is each side of the biggest pen with four sides, and of the biggest against a wall? Then put the pen in a corner, against two walls, and find its best shape.

For a younger onePara alguien más pequeño

Use only the width: make the pen thin, then fat, and press Count the squares together each time. Which one holds more?
