Let a marble go at the top of a foam or paper track and watch its height turn into speed and back. Shape two hills so it rolls all the way to the cup, with friction taking its share.

A marble coaster of foam pipe insulation: a glass marble waits at the top of the track, taped to a tall box, which runs down to the floor and over two hills resting on boxes to a paper cup lying on its side, with a card of energy bars in the corner.

The drawing shows where it starts. It runs here once its script has loaded.

Your challengeSu reto

  1. Let it go and get the marble over both hills and into the cup. Not done yet.Todavía no.
  2. Make a hill taller than the start and see where the marble turns back. Not done yet.Todavía no.
  3. With friction on, find a hill lower than the start that the marble still cannot get over. Not done yet.Todavía no.
  4. With friction on, find the tallest second hill the marble can still get over: five centimeters taller and it would not reach the cup. Not done yet.Todavía no.

Every challenge done. Now try it for real at home.Todos los retos logrados. Ahora pruébelo de verdad en casa.

The card shows the marble's energy as heights. Blue is its height now, the energy it has stored. Red is its motion, the lighter red the part that goes into spinning. Gray is what friction, a bump or the cup took. The last row puts them end to end, and they always reach the dashed mark, the energy its starting height gave it. The dashed line across the track is the start's height. Heights are measured from the floor, where the track lies on it. You can also drag the marble at the start or the top of a hill up and down.

What is happeningQué está pasando

A marble held up high has energy stored in its height. Let it go and it trades height for speed: the lower it gets, the faster it rolls. As it climbs a hill it trades the speed back for height, and slows down.

It can never climb higher than where it started, because all the energy it has came from its starting height. With no friction at all it would climb back to exactly that height, and no higher.

On a real track, friction takes a share on every bit of track, so the marble reaches each hill with a little less. That is why every hill after the start must be lower than the start by at least what friction takes on the way to it, and the second hill lower again.

A rolling marble also spins, and the spin takes a share of its motion energy, so it rolls a little slower than something sliding with no friction would. And a hilltop that curves over too sharply for the marble's speed cannot hold it on: the marble leaves the track.

Things to tryCosas para probar

  • Turn friction off and make the first hill exactly as tall as the start. What does the marble do at the top?
  • With friction on, switch from foam to paper. On which track can the second hill be taller?
  • Start high and make both hills low. Why does the marble leave the track?

A model: the marble is a solid glass ball rolling without slipping, so two parts in seven of its motion energy go into its spin. Friction takes the same share of height on every meter of track, five centimeters a meter on foam and half that on paper, values chosen for the model and not measured; a real track loses more at its joints, bumps and sharp bends. There is no air drag, the track does not sag, a marble that hops off the track always comes down in it, and one that lands harder than a drop of about five centimeters bounces out of the channel. The marble and the channel are drawn larger than life.

What to do nextQué hacer después

Make it harderHágalo más difícil

With friction on foam, find the tallest second hill for three different starts, and graph the start against how much lower than it that hill has to be. Is the gap the same each time?

For a younger onePara alguien más pequeño

Use only the start: make it high, then low, and say together whether the marble gets over the first hill each time.
