StepsPasos

  1. Pick a spot for the light. Pencil two lines from it toward one bottom corner, side by side but never touching. End one line on the very tip of the corner and the other just inside where the corner will fold, so that when you fold the tip over, the two ends meet.
  2. Stick copper tape along both lines. Where the path turns, fold the tape instead of cutting it, so it stays one piece.
  3. Find the LED's longer leg: that is its plus side. Spread the legs flat, set the LED on the light spot, and tape the longer leg onto the line that ends on the corner tip and the shorter leg onto the other line.
  4. A grown-up sets the coin cell on the end of the other line, the side marked plus facing up, and holds it in place with a small piece of clear tape across one edge.
  5. Fold the corner over so its copper presses on top of the coin cell. The loop is closed and the light comes on. Let go and it goes off: you made a switch.
  6. If it stays dark, check that the tape touches the cell and the LED legs firmly, and ask the grown-up to turn the coin cell over.
  7. When you finish, the grown-up takes out the coin cell and counts that every cell is back.

What you needLo que necesita

  • Card stock or a folded index cardCartulina o una tarjeta doblada
  • Copper tapeCinta de cobre
  • One LEDUn LED
  • A pencil, clear tape and scissorsUn lápiz, cinta transparente y tijeras
  • Markers to decorateMarcadores para decorar

Under a few dollars.Menos de unos pocos dólares.

Coin cells are a swallow hazard, and a swallowed one can burn through the inside of the throat or stomach in hours. A grown-up holds every coin cell, counts them out before you start and counts every one back when you finish. Keep them, new and used, far from young children and pets. If one might have been swallowed, go to the emergency room at once; do not wait for signs. Never connect the two sides of a battery to each other with tape or metal, and never put a battery in your mouth.

The big ideaLa gran idea

Electricity only flows around a complete loop: out of one side of the battery, along the path, through the light and back into the other side. Break the loop anywhere and the light goes out, which is all a switch does. Copper tape is a conductor, so electricity moves through it easily, and paper is an insulator, so it does not. The electricity is not used up in the wire: the same flow that leaves the battery comes back to it, and what the light uses is the energy the battery supplies. An LED also works in only one direction, so if it stays dark, the fix may be to turn it around.

Lay wires between a battery, an LED, a resistor, a switch and a gap. Make a full loop and the LED lights; leave a break anywhere and nothing flows.

Your challengeSu reto

  1. Finish the loop so the LED lights. Not done yet.Todavía no.
  2. Make it shine bright but safe: between fifteen and twenty-five milliamps through the LED.Hágalo brillar fuerte pero sin riesgo: entre quince y veinticinco miliamperios por el LED. Not done yet.Todavía no.
  3. Make one big loop through every part, the resistor, the LED, the switch and the gap, so the switch turns the light on and off. Not done yet.Todavía no.

Tap two ends on the board, or drag from one to another, to lay a wire; tap the switch to flip it. The dots are the moving charge and the arrows its way: out of the plus side, around the loop, back into the minus side. The bar fills at what a small LED is made for.

    What is happeningQué está pasando

Electricity flows only around a complete loop: out of the battery’s plus side, through every part, and back into its minus side. Break the loop anywhere, with an open switch or an empty gap, and it all stops.

Metal carries electricity and rubber does not, so a paper clip can close a gap and a rubber band cannot. An LED is a one way valve: it lights only with its long leg toward the plus side.

Nothing is used up in the wire: the same current that leaves the battery comes back to it, which is why the board shows the same number at both ends of the battery. What the light uses is the energy the battery supplies.

A resistor holds the current down so the LED is not pushed too hard. Two AA cells push with the same three volts as one coin cell, so through the same resistor the light is about as bright: a bigger battery lasts longer, it does not push harder.

    Things to tryCosas para probar

    • Lay the last wire to finish the loop, then turn the LED around. Does it still light?
    • Run the loop through the gap and bridge it with the paper clip, then the rubber band, then nothing. Which ones are conductors?
    • Take the resistor out with the two AA cells and read the warning, then find the resistor that keeps the LED bright but safe.
    • Join the battery’s plus and minus sides with one wire and watch where the current goes. Never do this with a real battery.

The numbers come from a simple model of fresh batteries, a red LED and ideal wires; real cells sag as they tire, a coin cell most of all, and LEDs differ by color and part. Real coin cells are a swallowing danger: a grown-up counts them out and back, and keeps them far from young children.

The grown-up builds the card, and it never leaves the grown-up's hands while the coin cell is in it. The younger one decorates it, presses the corner to make it light and lets go to make it dark: that is the loop opening and closing.
