StepsPasos

  1. Measure your windowsill's length and width and work out its area. How many cups fit in a row, with a finger's width between them?
  2. A grown-up pokes a small hole in the bottom of each cup.
  3. Thread a wick through the hole so one end sits up inside the cup and the other hangs below. Fill the cup with soil around the wick.
  4. Plant two or three seeds in each cup, as deep as the directions on the seeds say, and label each cup.
  5. Set each cup on top of a jar of water so the hanging wick dips into the water. Water from the top once to start, then let the wick do the work, and keep the jars filled.
  6. Each day, measure the tallest sprout with the ruler and write it in your growth journal, with a word about the soil: dry, damp or soggy.

What you needLo que necesita

  • Clear plastic cupsVasos de plástico transparentes
  • Potting soilTierra para macetas
  • Seeds, such as beansSemillas, como frijoles
  • A jar or a cut plastic bottle to hold water under each cupUn frasco o una botella de plástico cortada para tener agua debajo de cada vaso
  • Cotton string or a strip of old cloth, for the wickCordón de algodón o una tira de tela vieja, para la mecha
  • A ruler and a notebook for the growth journalUna regla y un cuaderno para el diario de crecimiento

Under a few dollars.Menos de unos pocos dólares.

Wash hands after touching soil and seeds, and check for plant or soil allergies first. A grown-up does any poking or cutting. Seeds and seedlings are not for eating: nothing grown here is eaten unless a grown-up has checked that it is a food plant and that its seeds were not treated with chemicals.Lávese las manos después de tocar la tierra y las semillas, y revise primero si hay alergia a alguna planta o a la tierra.

The big ideaLa gran idea

Plants need light, water, air and warmth, and they make their own food from light, water and a gas from the air. Soil holds water and gives the plant minerals, but plants do not eat dirt. More water is not always better: roots need air too, and soil that stays soggy can make them rot. A wick waterer moves water up a string or a strip of cloth into the soil, the same way a paper towel soaks up a spill, so the plant gets a steady drink instead of a flood.

Measure two plants day by day, chart their heights side by side, and see how fast each one grew between measurements.

An example growth journal of made-up numbers, not a measurement: two cups of soil on a windowsill, one watered by a wick from a jar and one by hand, each plant drawn at its height on the chart beside it, with their growth per day as bars below

The drawing shows where it starts. It runs here once its script has loaded.

Your challengeSu reto

  1. In the wick example, move the day to the stretch when Cup A grew fastest. Not done yet.Todavía no.
  2. In the too much water example, find a stretch when the soaked cup grew less than a millimeter a day. Not done yet.Todavía no.
  3. Add two measurements of your own to one cup, a few days apart, so the chart can show how fast it grew. Not done yet.Todavía no.

Every challenge done. Now try it for real at home.Todos los retos logrados. Ahora pruébelo de verdad en casa.

What does the chart show?¿Qué muestra la gráfica?
Which cup are you measuring?¿Qué vaso está midiendo?

Cup A,Vaso A,
Cup B,Vaso B,

Circles and the solid line are Cup A; squares and the dashed line are Cup B. Each plant stands at its height on the chart’s own scale. The bars below show how fast each cup grew between two measurements. The lines stop at the last measurement: the chart never guesses what comes next. Your numbers are kept only in this browser on this device, and never sent anywhere; Start over keeps them, and only Clear my measurements erases them.

What is happeningQué está pasando

A plant needs light, water, air and warmth, and room for its roots. It makes its own food from light, air and water; it does not eat dirt. The soil holds the water and a little of the minerals the plant needs.

A growth journal turns a plant into numbers you can compare. Measure from the soil to the top on the days you choose, and the chart plots each cup. The growth per day between two measurements is the change in height divided by the days between them.

More water is not always better. Roots need air too, and soil that stays soaked can slow a plant down. A wick waterer, a cotton string from a jar of water into the soil, keeps the soil moist without soaking it.Más agua no siempre es mejor.

The chart shows only what was measured. Its lines stop at the last measurement, because nobody knows a plant’s next height until it is measured.

Things to tryCosas para probar

  • Plant two cups the same way, water one with a wick waterer and one by hand, and enter both heights every few days.
  • Slide the day through the too much water example and watch the soaked cup fall behind.
  • Measure the same plant twice in a row. Do you get the same number? Small differences are part of measuring.Mida la misma planta dos veces seguidas. ¿Obtiene el mismo número? Las pequeñas diferencias son parte de medir.
  • Change only one thing between the two cups, so you know what made the difference.

This is a journal, not a model of how plants grow. The two examples are made-up numbers, not a measurement, to show what a journal can look like, and the plants are drawn only at the heights measured. Your own plants will grow at their own pace, and the numbers you enter stay only in this browser on this device.

Your engineering challengeSu reto de ingeniería

Carrying cups of water is a problem worth solving. Design and test a watering gadget that keeps the soil damp for days, and say what need it answers.

Make it an experimentConviértalo en un experimento

Science is about changing one thing and watching what happens. Write down your guess, your hypothesis, before you start.

  • Water one cup by hand and give another a wick, and compare how the soil feels each day.
  • Try wicks of different materials: cotton string, a strip of an old shirt, yarn.
  • Move one cup to a darker spot and measure how both plants grow.

Make it harderHágalo más difícil

Graph your growth journal, with days along the bottom and height up the side, and compare the hand-watered cup with the wick cup. Then improve your gadget once, explain why, and pitch it to your family with at least one measurement in the pitch.

For a younger onePara alguien más pequeño

Plant one bean in a clear cup, pressed against the side so the roots will show, and check it together every morning. Let the younger one pour the water into the jar.
