Shine a flashlight through things and sort their shadowsIlumine cosas con una linterna y clasifique sus sombras
Hold everyday things in a flashlight beam and sort them by their shadows: dark, pale or almost none.

StepsPasos
- Dim the room and shine the flashlight on the wall.
- Set out the three sorting spots: dark, pale and almost none.
- Before each test, your child guesses which spot the thing belongs in.Antes de cada prueba, la niña o el niño adivina en qué lugar va la cosa.
- Hold the light still while your child holds the thing in the beam, close to the wall. Look at the shadow together and name it.Sostenga la luz sin moverla mientras la niña o el niño pone la cosa frente al haz, cerca de la pared. Miren juntos la sombra y pónganle nombre.
- Put the thing in its spot. If it surprised you, move it to the right spot and say out loud what happened.
- Let your child hunt the room for one more thing to test.
- At the end, ask: which pile would make a good window? Which would make a good curtain?
What you needLo que necesita
- A flashlight, or the light on a phone, held by the grown-upUna linterna, o la luz de un teléfono, que sostiene la persona adulta
- A bare wall, or a big sheet of white paper taped to the wallUna pared lisa, o una hoja grande de papel blanco pegada en la pared
- Three spots to sort into, like three towels or three sheets of paper marked dark, pale and almost noneTres lugares para clasificar, como tres toallas o tres hojas marcadas oscura, clara y casi ninguna
- A small dish of waterUn platito con agua
Things already at home.Cosas que ya hay en casa.
Stay within arm's reach the whole time. You hold the flashlight the whole time, never your child, and no one shines it into anyone's eyes. Use a flashlight with ordinary batteries behind a closed cover, or the light on a phone, never a light that runs on button or coin batteries. If your child is under three or still puts things in their mouth, everything you test is too big to fit through a toilet-paper tube, and plastic bags and plastic wrap stay out of reach. For the wet test, use a small dish of water, stay close, and empty it together when you are done.

The big ideaLa gran idea
A flashlight sends out a beam of light, and the beam keeps going until something gets in its way. Some materials, like clear plastic and water, let almost all of the light through: they are transparent, and their shadow is faint. Some, like wax paper or a thin white cloth, let some light through but scatter it, so you cannot see clearly through them: they are translucent, and their shadow is pale and fuzzy. Others, like a book, cardboard or your hand, stop the light: they are opaque, and their shadow is dark. A shadow is not a thing at all. It is the place the light could not reach. Builders choose materials this way every day: glass to let light in, a curtain to soften it, a wall to block it.Una linterna lanza un haz de luz, y el haz sigue su camino hasta que algo se le atraviesa.
Your engineering challengeSu reto de ingeniería
Put on a shadow show with three characters: one with a dark shadow, one with a pale shadow and one that is almost invisible. Choose a material for each, and guess before you test.

Science is about changing one thing and watching what happens. Write down your guess, your hypothesis, before you start.
- Fold a sheet of wax paper once, then again, then again, and test it each time. How many layers does it take before its shadow turns dark?
- Test a paper towel dry, then dip one corner in water and test it again. Does the wet part make a paler shadow than the dry part?
- Compare a clear plastic cup with a colored see-through cup of the same kind. Is the colored cup's shadow gray, or does it glow with color?
