StepsPasos

  1. Cover the front of each flashlight with one color, held on with a rubber band. If a light looks pale, add a second layer.
  2. Darken the room and stand about two steps from the white wall.
  3. Shine the red light on the wall, then the green one so the two circles overlap partway. Look at the overlap.
  4. Add the blue light so all three circles overlap in the middle. Look at each place where two overlap, and at the middle.
  5. Move the lights closer or farther until the middle looks as white as you can make it. Real plastic lets through more than one color, so your white may look a little tinted.
  6. Draw what you saw with colored pencils and label each overlap.

Never shine a flashlight into anyone's eyes, and never look at the Sun, even through colored plastic or sunglasses: it is not safe for eyes. Some small lights hold button or coin batteries, which can burn through a child's throat in as little as two hours if swallowed, so use lights whose battery doors stay closed, keep them away from young children, and go to the emergency room at once if one may have been swallowed. Clear the floor before you turn off the lights.

The big ideaLa gran idea

Light mixes by adding. Your eyes have three kinds of color-sensing cells, called cones, tuned roughly to red, green and blue light, and your brain reads the mix of their signals as one color. Shine red and green light on the same spot and two kinds of cones fire, so you see yellow. Add blue and all three fire: white. Paint works the other way. Each paint soaks up some colors of the light that falls on it and sends back the rest, so mixing paints takes more and more light away, and enough of them together make a dark, muddy color. That is why mixing light and mixing paint follow different rules.

Mixing light and mixing paintMezclar luz y mezclar pintura

Shine red, green and blue flashlights on a wall and watch light add up, then mix cyan, magenta and yellow paint and watch it take light away. Then match a target color both ways.

Three flashlights stand upright on a table under a dark wall, and the red and blue ones light overlapping spots that turn magenta where they meet; beside it, cyan and magenta paint overlap on white paper and make blue; below, a screen pixel, the mix and an orange target.

As a screen stores it:Como la guarda una pantalla:

A screen pixel is three tiny lights, red, green and blue, each stored as a number from none to full strength. The paints are cyan, magenta and yellow: each one soaks up one color of light.

What is happeningQué está pasando

Light mixes by adding. Shine a red and a green flashlight on the same spot of a white wall and the spot looks yellow; add blue and it looks white. Your eye has three kinds of color sensors, tuned to red, green and blue light, and your brain reads the mix of their signals as one color.

A screen uses the same trick. Every pixel is three tiny lights, red, green and blue, too small to see apart. A picture is stored as three numbers for every pixel, how bright each light should be, from zero to two hundred fifty-five.

Paint works the other way, by taking away. White paper bounces back every color of the light that falls on it. Cyan paint soaks up red light, magenta soaks up green, and yellow soaks up blue. Mix cyan and yellow and only green is left to bounce back, so you see green; mix all three and almost nothing bounces back, so it looks black.

That is why a printer uses cyan, magenta and yellow ink, and a screen uses red, green and blue light.

Things to tryCosas para probar

  • Turn on only red and green light, then add a little blue. What happens to the yellow?
  • Mix cyan and yellow paint. Which color of light is left to bounce back?Mezcle pintura cian y amarilla. ¿Qué color de luz queda para devolverse?
  • Make the target with light, then make it again with paint, and compare the amounts.
  • Turn all three lights down to half. What happens to white?Baje las tres luces a la mitad. ¿Qué le pasa al blanco?

This is a model. Its lights are the pure red, green and blue a screen uses, and its paints are perfect inks that each soak up exactly one color of light. Real flashlights and paints are less pure: three real paints mixed together make a dark, muddy brown rather than black, which is why printers add black ink.

Look at a white part of a lit screen through a magnifying glass, or take a close-up photo of it with a phone, and see what colors the white is made of. Then look at a yellow part of the screen the same way, and explain what you find using the rules of mixing light.

For a younger onePara alguien más pequeño

A younger child can hold one light and call out the new color each time two circles meet. Turn the lights on and off for them, keep the battery doors closed, and stay close in the dark.
