StepsPasos

  1. Gather about ten things to test and lay them out on the table.
  2. Before testing, sort them onto the two plates by your prediction: pulled or not pulled.
  3. Touch the magnet to each thing, one at a time. If it moves toward the magnet or sticks, it is pulled.
  4. Move each one to the plate where it really belongs, and circle every surprise on your list.
  5. Next to each metal thing, write what you think it is made of. Look for a pattern in the ones that were pulled.
  6. Test the fridge door, a metal chair leg and a door handle, and add them to your list.
  7. Count the small things back into a box, and put the magnet back on the fridge.

What you needLo que necesita

  • One large fridge magnetUn imán de refrigerador grande
  • About ten things to test: paper clips, a spoon, aluminum foil, a coin, a key, a pencil, a plastic toy, a food can, a drink canUnas diez cosas para probar: clips, una cuchara, papel aluminio, una moneda, una llave, un lápiz, un juguete de plástico, una lata de comida, una lata de bebida
  • Two plates or sheets of paper labeled pulled and not pulledDos platos u hojas con los letreros atraído y no atraído
  • Paper and a pencilPapel y un lápiz

Things already at home.Cosas que ya hay en casa.

Use one large fridge magnet. Never use small strong magnets, such as magnetic balls, beads or tiny disc magnets: if a child swallows two or more, they can pull together inside the body, and anyone who may have swallowed a magnet needs medical care right away. Keep coins, paper clips and other small things away from babies and toddlers, who can choke on them. Keep magnets away from anyone with a pacemaker or another implanted medical device.

The big ideaLa gran idea

A magnet pulls on only a few materials: iron and most things made with it, like most steel, plus nickel and cobalt. These metals are made of tiny regions that each act like a small magnet, and a nearby magnet lines them up so they pull back toward it. Most other materials, including aluminum, copper, brass, plastic, wood and paper, are not pulled at all, so being metal is not enough. Even steel can surprise you: some stainless steel is barely pulled. Recycling centers use this difference every day, running big magnets over a stream of cans to pull out the steel ones and leave the aluminum ones behind.

The blue lines are the magnet's own field, running out of its north end and around into its south end. The compass needle's red end points along them; it also feels the Earth's field, pointing north. Each grid square is two centimeters.

The red arrows are the push or pull on each magnet: always equal, and opposite. A magnet slides only when the push or pull beats the table's grip.

A green check means the magnet picked it up; a gray cross means it did not.

What is happeningQué está pasando

Every magnet has two ends called poles, north and south. Around it is a magnetic field, which we draw as lines that leave the north pole and curve around into the south pole. Where the lines crowd together, near the poles, the field is strongest.

A compass needle is a tiny magnet, so its north end turns to point along the field line where it sits. Go once around a bar magnet and the needle turns around twice. Far from the magnet, the Earth's own magnetism wins, and the needle points north: the whole Earth is a giant, weak magnet.

Opposite poles pull together and like poles push apart, and the push or pull grows quickly as the magnets get closer. Two magnets on a table slide only when that force beats the table's grip on them.

A magnet picks up things with iron in them, like steel. Iron is full of tiny magnets that line up with the magnet's field and get pulled. Aluminum and copper are metals too, but a magnet does not pull them, and plastic and wood have no iron at all.

Things to tryCosas para probar

  • Walk the compass slowly around the magnet and count how many times the needle turns around.
  • Move the compass far past one end, then leave out the Earth's magnetism. What changes?
  • Find how close two magnets must be before they snap together when you let go.Descubra qué tan cerca deben estar dos imanes para que se junten de golpe al soltarlos.
  • Guess before each test: will the magnet pick it up? Then try it at home with a fridge magnet.

This is a model of one ceramic bar magnet, with its two poles drawn as points at its ends. Real poles spread across the ends, so up close the model cannot say how hard two touching magnets hold on. The compass feels only the level part of the Earth's field, and north here is magnetic north, a few degrees from true north. Some kinds of stainless steel are not pulled by a magnet at all.

  • Change only what is in between: put one, two, then more sheets of paper between the magnet and the fridge door, and count how many it can hold through.
  • Change only the metal: test a steel spoon, a stainless steel spoon, a ball of aluminum foil, a coin and a key, and sort them by how hard they are pulled.

Make it harderHágalo más difícil

Make a compass. A grown-up strokes a steel sewing needle along the magnet about twenty times, always in the same direction and lifting it away at the end, then lays it on a small piece of paper floating in a bowl of water. Which way does it settle? Turn the bowl and see whether it settles the same way again, then compare it with a phone's compass.

For a younger onePara alguien más pequeño

Little ones can do the predicting and the sorting while you hold the magnet. Give them only things too big to fit through a toilet-paper tube, keep the coins and paper clips in your hands, and stay within arm's reach.
