Make a water cycle in a bag on a sunny windowHaga un ciclo del agua en una bolsa en una ventana soleada

Tape a sealed bag with a little colored water to a sunny window, and watch the water rise as vapor, gather into drops up high and run back down, leaving the color behind.

StepsPasos

  1. Draw the cycle on the bag with the marker: a sun in a top corner, a cloud near the top and waves near the bottom.
  2. Pour in the water and add one drop of food coloring. Seal the bag tightly.
  3. A grown-up tapes the bag flat to a sunny window, with the water at the bottom.
  4. Check it every hour or so. Look for fog up high, then for drops, then for drops running down.
  5. Look closely at the drops near the top. Do they carry the color, or is it left behind?Observe de cerca las gotas de arriba. ¿Llevan el color, o se quedó atrás?
  6. Each time, draw what you see and write the time beside it.Cada vez, dibuje lo que ve y anote la hora al lado.
  7. After a day or two, a grown-up takes the bag down, pours out the water and throws the bag away.

What you needLo que necesita

  • A drop of blue food coloring, if you have itUna gota de colorante azul para alimentos, si tiene
  • A permanent markerUn marcador permanente
  • Clear tapeCinta adhesiva transparente
  • A window that gets sunUna ventana donde dé el sol

Things already at home.Cosas que ya hay en casa.

Plastic bags can suffocate a young child, so a grown-up tapes the bag up high, throws it away at the end, and keeps spare bags out of reach. A grown-up does the taping, so no one climbs on furniture to reach the window. The water in the bag is not for drinking. Food coloring stains hands and clothes, so use just a drop.

The big ideaLa gran idea

The sun drives the water cycle. Its energy warms water so that some of it evaporates, turning into vapor, a gas you cannot see. When the vapor meets something cooler, it condenses back into tiny drops of liquid, the way clouds form in the sky. When enough drops join, they grow heavy and fall, and gravity carries the water back down to start again. In your bag, the water at the bottom is the sea, the sunny window is the sun, the cooler plastic up high is the sky, and the drops that run down are the rain. Only the water evaporates, so the color stays behind, the same way salt stays behind when sea water dries in salt ponds.

The water cycleEl ciclo del agua

Turn up the sun and the warmth, then follow water from the sea into a cloud, down onto a mountain as rain or snow, and back to the sea.

A sea under the sun, a forest on low land and a tall mountain, with vapor rising from the sea, the wind carrying it over the land and up the slope into a cloud that rains on the mountainside.

Your challengeSu reto

  1. Make the sea give off more than five millimeters of water a day. Not done yet.Todavía no.
  2. Make it snow on the mountain top. Not done yet.Todavía no.
  3. Follow a drop all the way around and back to the sea. Not done yet.Todavía no.
  4. Bring a heavy snowfall to the mountain top: more than twenty-five millimeters of water a day. Not done yet.Todavía no.

Blue arrows are water on the move: vapor rising from the sea, the wind carrying it up the mountain, rain running off or soaking in. Dashed lines mark the cloud base and the snow line.

What is happeningQué está pasando

The sun drives the water cycle. Its energy makes water evaporate from the sea as vapor, a gas you cannot see. Stronger sunshine and warmer water make it evaporate faster.

The wind carries the moist air over the land and pushes it up the mountain. Air that rises spreads out and cools. Once it has cooled to its dew point, the vapor condenses on tiny specks of dust into droplets, and a cloud appears.

Droplets bump together and grow until they are heavy enough to fall. Where the air is below freezing the water falls as snow, which is why a high mountain can wear snow while the land below gets rain. The far side of the mountain stays dry, because the air has already let go of its water.

On the ground, rain soaks in or runs off. A forest floor drinks most of it; pavement and roofs send most of it into the river. Rivers and groundwater carry the water back to the sea, and the cycle goes on.En el suelo, la lluvia se filtra o escurre.

Things to tryCosas para probar

  • Slide the sunshine from winter to summer and watch the vapor arrows and the rain grow.
  • Cool the air one degree at a time and watch the snow line come down the mountain.
  • Change the land from forest to a city and compare how much of the rain runs off.
  • Press the drop button again and again, and read what moves the water at each step.

This is a model. Its equations for evaporation, clouds and cooling are real, but how much moisture the air carries, the steady wind and the share of a cloud’s water that falls are set by assumptions, and the sea is taken to be as warm as the air. Real storms vary a great deal, and plants give off water too, which the model leaves out.

What to do nextQué hacer después

Make it harderHágalo más difícil

Use salt instead of color. Stir a spoonful of salt into the water, and after a few days let a few drops from the top of the bag dry on a dark plate beside a few drops from the bottom. Which ones leave white crystals behind? Use what you find to explain why rain is fresh even when it comes from the sea.

For a younger onePara alguien más pequeño

Little ones can draw on the bag before it goes up and check for rain with you each time. Keep the bag taped high where they cannot pull it down, and keep every plastic bag out of their reach.
