Find out which container holds more by counting cups of waterAverigüe qué recipiente guarda más contando vasitos de agua

Guess which of two different-shaped containers holds more water, then fill each one with the same small cup, counting every pour.

StepsPasos

  1. Set up on the tray or at the sink, with a towel nearby.
  2. Put a tall, thin container beside a short, wide one. Ask: which one holds more water? Your child points.
  3. Fill the small cup to the top and pour it into the tall container. Make a tally mark.
  4. Keep going, one cup and one mark at a time, until the container is full. Count the marks together.
  5. Do the same with the wide container.Hagan lo mismo con el recipiente ancho.
  6. Compare the counts. More cups means it holds more. Was the guess right?Comparen las cuentas. Más vasitos quiere decir que guarda más. ¿Acertó la predicción?
  7. Pour the tall container into the wide one and watch the level change. Ask: is it the same water?
  8. Empty everything together and dry hands.Vacíen todo juntos y séquense las manos.

What you needLo que necesita

  • A tray, a tub or the kitchen sinkUna charola, una tina o el fregadero de la cocina
  • Two or three plastic containers of different shapes, like a tall, thin one and a short, wide oneDos o tres recipientes de plástico de distintas formas, como uno alto y delgado y uno bajo y ancho
  • One small plastic cup to measure withUn vasito de plástico para medir
  • A pitcher of waterUna jarra con agua
  • Paper and a crayon for tally marksPapel y un crayón para hacer marcas

Things already at home.Cosas que ya hay en casa.

Stay within arm's reach the whole time, at any depth of water, and empty every container together when you are done. Use plastic containers only, never glass, and only ones that held food, never medicine or cleaners. If your child is under three or still puts things in their mouth, every container and cup is too big to fit through a toilet-paper tube. Wipe up spills as you go so no one slips.

The big ideaLa gran idea

How much a container holds is called its capacity, and our eyes are easy to fool about it. A tall, thin glass often looks as if it holds more than a short, wide bowl, because we notice height first. To find out for sure, people who measure use a unit: one small cup, filled the same way every time. Count how many cups fill each container, and the counts settle it, whatever the shapes look like. Pour the water from a tall glass into a wide bowl and the level drops, but the amount stays the same, because none was added and none spilled. Every measuring cup in a kitchen is a unit people agreed on, so a recipe works the same in any home.

Your engineering challengeSu reto de ingeniería

Line up three or four containers from the one you think holds the least to the one you think holds the most. Then measure each one with your cup and see whether your line was right.

Science is about changing one thing and watching what happens. Write down your guess, your hypothesis, before you start.

  • Keep the container the same and change only the cup you measure with: a small cup, then a bigger one. Why does the count change?
  • Keep the water the same and change only its home: pour a tall glassful into a wide bowl, then back. Did the amount change, or only how it looks?
  • Keep the cup the same and change only how full you fill it: to the very top, then only halfway. What happens to the count?

What to do nextQué hacer después

Make it harderHágalo más difícil

Make your own measuring bottle: stick a strip of tape up the side of a clear plastic bottle and mark a line each time you pour in one small cup. Then use it to measure three containers without counting out loud.

For a younger onePara alguien más pequeño

Just fill and pour: a big cup into a small cup until it spills over, and a small cup into a big one until it fills. Say the words full, empty, more and less.
