Build a size gate and sort what fits throughConstruya una puerta de tamaños y clasifique lo que pasa por ella

Cut one round hole in a box lid, then sort a basket of toys and kitchen things into fits and too big, the way machines sort by size.

StepsPasos

  1. Away from your child, cut a round hole in the lid about as wide as an orange, tape over the cut edge, and put the lid on the box.
  2. Lay the towel beside the box for the things that are too big. Anything that fits will land in the box.
  3. Your child picks a thing and guesses: will it fit through the gate?
  4. Test it: if it drops through on its own or with a gentle nudge, it fits. No squashing allowed.
  5. Things that stay on top go on the towel. A surprise gets a cheer and a sentence: it was bigger than it looked.
  6. When the basket is empty, open the box and count what got through.
  7. Ask: what is the same about everything in the box? What is the same about everything on the towel?

What you needLo que necesita

  • A shoebox or another box with a lidUna caja de zapatos u otra caja con tapa
  • Scissors or a craft knife, for the grown-up onlyTijeras o un cúter, solo para la persona adulta
  • Tape to cover the cut edgeCinta para cubrir la orilla cortada
  • A basket of things to sort, every one too big to fit through a toilet-paper tube: a tennis ball, a big ball, a wooden spoon, a plastic cup, a block, a stuffed animal and a board bookUna canasta de cosas para clasificar, todas demasiado grandes para caber dentro de un tubo de papel higiénico: una pelota de tenis, una pelota grande, una cuchara de madera, un vaso de plástico, un bloque, un peluche y un libro de cartón
  • A towel for the things that are too bigUna toalla para lo que no pasa

Things already at home.Cosas que ya hay en casa.

Stay in the room and watch. You do all the cutting, away from your child, cover the cut edge with tape, and put the scissors or knife away before play. Pull out any staples in the box first. Cut the hole wider than a toilet-paper tube, and choose things that are all too big to fit through a toilet-paper tube, so even the things that pass the gate are safe for a child under three or one who still puts things in their mouth. Use only clean toys and kitchen things, never medicine bottles or anything that held a cleaner.

The big ideaLa gran idea

Machines sort by size all the time, and the simplest sorter has no moving parts at all: a screen or a gate with a hole. Small things pass through, big things are held back, and no one has to decide one by one. The very first step at a wastewater treatment plant is a screen that catches big things like wood and rocks, so they cannot damage the machines further along. A kitchen colander sorts pasta from water the same way. Your gate does one job well: anything smaller than the hole passes, anything bigger stays. Turn a thing a different way and it may suddenly fit, which is a real engineering idea: the size that matters is the size that meets the hole.

Your engineering challengeSu reto de ingeniería

Make a second, bigger gate in another box lid and sort the same basket into three piles: fits the small gate, fits only the big gate, and too big for both.

Science is about changing one thing and watching what happens. Write down your guess, your hypothesis, before you start.

  • Keep the gate the same and change only how each thing faces: a spoon lying flat, then standing on its end. Which things change their answer?
  • Keep the basket the same and make the hole a little bigger. Which things switch piles?
  • Keep the size about the same and change only the shape of the hole: a long slot instead of a circle. Test the same things again.

Make it harderHágalo más difícil

Turn the sorter into a machine: lean a ramp of stiff cardboard down toward the gate so things roll to it on their own. Does your machine sort without a hand to help? What gets stuck, and how would you fix it?Convierta el clasificador en una máquina: incline una rampa de cartón firme hacia la puerta para que las cosas rueden solas hasta ella. ¿Su máquina clasifica sin que nadie ayude? ¿Qué se atora, y cómo lo arreglaría?

For a younger onePara alguien más pequeño

Skip the guessing. Hand over one thing at a time and let your little one push it in or set it on the towel, saying in or too big each time.
