Run the cleanroom challenge at the kitchen tableHaga el reto de la sala limpia en la mesa de la cocina
Gown up in a set order, move the air one way, and keep a sheet of dark paper free of flour for five minutes, then explain one step of chipmaking with no magic words.Póngase el traje en un orden fijo, mueva el aire en una sola dirección y mantenga una hoja de papel oscuro libre de harina durante cinco minutos; luego explique un paso de la fabricación de chips sin palabras mágicas.

StepsPasos
- Look at a true-size picture of a wafer, or draw one: a disk the size of a dinner plate carrying hundreds of chips. Say the purity out loud: nearly every atom silicon.
- Set the cleanroom: a clear table, the dark sheet in the middle, the fan at one end blowing gently across toward the open side of the room.
- Gown in a set order and say it as you go: hair cover, sleeves, apron, hands washed and dried, nothing that sheds.Vístase en un orden fijo y dígalo mientras lo hace: cofia, mangas, delantal, manos lavadas y secas, nada que suelte pelusa.
- Start the timer. The contaminator stands at the far end and shakes flour into the air at arm's length. The worker keeps the wafer clean: no leaning over it, no fast moves, no touching.
- After five minutes, inspect the sheet with the lens and count the specks. Zero is the goal; every speck is a dead chip.
- Explain printing with light: coat, shine light through a pattern, etch, repeat. Draw the four steps.
- Ask your listener to explain it back. If they can, you explained it well.
What you needLo que necesita
- A sheet of dark paper or a dark plate, as the waferUna hoja de papel oscuro o un plato oscuro, como la oblea
- Flour, or corn starch for an allergyHarina, o fécula de maíz si hay alergia
- A clean apron, a hair cover or a hat, and long sleeves, as the gownUn delantal limpio, una cofia o un gorro, y mangas largas, como el traje
- A small fan and a timerUn ventilador pequeño y un cronómetro
- A hand lens, if you have oneUna lupa, si tiene
Things already at home.Cosas que ya hay en casa.
Check for allergies before the flour challenge, and keep corn starch ready as a substitute for anyone with a wheat or flour allergy. Taste nothing, keep flour out of eyes, and keep it away from anyone it could bother to breathe, such as someone with asthma. This adds no other hazards: there is no chemistry here and nothing hot, and any later bench work stays at low voltage, twelve volts or less, under the safety rules you already follow. Keep the fan's cord and blades away from little ones, and wipe the table after.

The big ideaLa gran idea
Sand becomes a chip through purity and patience. Silicon is purified until almost every atom is silicon, grown into one large crystal and sliced into thin wafers. Then a light-sensitive layer is coated on, light shines through a pattern, the exposed part is etched away, and that repeats for dozens of layers: photolithography, printing with light. The features are so small that a fingerprint or one speck of dust can ruin a chip. That is why a chip factory, called a fab, is a cleanroom: workers gown in a set order and the air flows smoothly in one direction so dust is carried away, the same care as a good workshop at a much tighter tolerance. One habit for any news about a fab: announced is not built.

Keep a dark sheet of paper free of flour for five minutes while someone shakes flour nearby, then explain photolithography to a family member with no magic words until they can explain it back.

Science is about changing one thing and watching what happens. Write down your guess, your hypothesis, before you start.
- Change the airflow: a fan blowing across the sheet toward the flour shaker, the fan off, and the fan blowing the wrong way. Count the specks.
- Change the gowning: hair covered and sleeves pulled down against no cover at all. Count the specks that fell from the worker.
- Change the time: one minute against five. Is contamination steady over time?Cambie el tiempo: un minuto contra cinco. ¿La contaminación es constante con el tiempo?
