Draw around a puddle and watch the sun shrink itDibuje el contorno de un charco y vea cómo el sol lo encoge
After the rain, trace a puddle's edge with sidewalk chalk, come back about every hour to trace it again, and watch evaporation draw rings.

StepsPasos
- After the storm, wait until thirty minutes have passed with no thunder, then find a puddle on pavement together.
- Walk around its edge together while one of you traces the edge with chalk.
- Draw a little sun or clock beside the line, or write the time.
- Ask: will the puddle get bigger or smaller? Where will it shrink first?
- Come back in about an hour and trace the new edge in a different color.
- Keep coming back and tracing until the puddle is gone.
- Read the rings together: where did the water leave first? Point up: some of it went into the air.
- Wash hands when you come in.Lávense las manos al entrar.
What you needLo que necesita
- A puddle after the rain, on a sidewalk, a driveway or a patioUn charco después de la lluvia, en una acera, una entrada de autos o un patio
- Thick sidewalk chalk in two or three colorsTiza gruesa para el piso en dos o tres colores
- A clock or a phone to keep track of the timeUn reloj o un teléfono para llevar la cuenta del tiempo
- Paper and a crayon, if you want to draw the ringsPapel y un crayón, si quiere dibujar los anillos
Things already at home.Cosas que ya hay en casa.
Stay within arm's reach at every puddle, at any depth, and hold hands near streets, driveways and parked cars. Go out only after thirty minutes with no thunder, and stay away from storm drains, ditches and moving water. Pavement can get hot in the sun, so feel it before your child kneels on it. Puddle water is for looking and stepping, never for drinking; if your child swallows something that worries you, call Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222. If your child is under three or still puts things in their mouth, the chalk stays in your hand.

The big ideaLa gran idea
A puddle does not only soak into the ground. Some of its water goes up into the air. The sun's warmth gives the water's tiny particles enough energy to break away from the puddle and drift off as water vapor, a gas you cannot see. That is evaporation, and it is one step of the water cycle: the same water rises, cools, forms clouds and falls again as rain. Chalk lines make the invisible visible. Each new line sits inside the last one, and the rings show which parts of the puddle dried first, usually the shallow edges. A puddle in the shade, or on a cool, still day, shrinks more slowly than one in the sun.
Your engineering challengeSu reto de ingeniería
Pick two puddles, one in the sun and one in the shade, and predict which will be gone first. Check them together through the day. Which clue helped you predict?

Science is about changing one thing and watching what happens. Write down your guess, your hypothesis, before you start.
- Trace a puddle in the sun and a puddle in the shade at the same times. Which one shrinks faster?
- Make your own puddles: pour the same cup of water on pavement and on bare dirt, side by side, and trace both. Where does the water go faster?
- Trace a puddle in the same spot on a windy day and on a still day. Does the wind help the water leave?
